I just wanted some brownies! D:
ShameI came home from class today, took care of my three dogs and then decided to make some lunch. While I waited for lunch to be ready, I decided I would make some brownies too since I've been craving them since last night, so I got out all the stuff I'd need and set the oven to heat up. Part way through mixing the ingredients, I remembered that I was supposed to move the oven rack up. This is something I always forget, so I thought nothing of it and grabbed two pot holders and moved the rack like I always do then put the pot holders back in the drawer. I thought I could smell smoke, but I decided it was whatever was stuck in the bottom of the oven because there were some charred things down there so I ignored it. I went back to mixing ingredients and then noticed the smell seemed like it was getting stronger so I turned around to see smoke pouring out of what I THOUGHT was the oven, but no, it was the drawer NEXT to the oven. I yanked it open right away only to find out there was a fire going on inside burning all the pot holders (it wasn't huge... just about the size of one of the small pot holders). That's when every fire alarm in the house went off.
Naturally, I panicked.
So, a few seconds of being deafened by beeping alarms and barking dogs later, I decided water damage was a better alternative to my house burning down, so I grabbed a pot, filled it with water and dumped it in the drawer. The fire went out but the alarms were still going off so I ran around opening doors and windows to air out the kitchen. When the noise finally stopped, I called my mom and then had to wet down the upper inside of the drawer because it wouldn't stop spewing smoke. Once it stopped, I had a lovely mess of water and ash to clean up off the floor.
Luckily, the only things destroyed were most of our pot holders (we have three left... two were not in the drawer), all the ziplock bags in the box next to the fire and part of a dish towel. The inside of the drawer is charred a bit though... Here's a picture of the top of the inside: [link]
